Chapter Eight

There wasn’t just food in the gourmet-style kitchen. Melissa had prepared an entire meal, leaving the hot dishes in the warming drawer and the cold food in the refrigerator. There was even a bottle of chilled wine and coffee waiting to be brewed.

“Melissa likes to cook,” was all Flynn had to say, but Whitney could see he was as surprised and touched by the gesture as she was.

“You have incredible friends, Flynn.”

He nodded and turned away. Worried, scared and too tired to think straight anymore, they ate dinner and Whitney tried to forget about the darkness beyond the undraped patio window. They cleaned up so no trace of their presence showed.

“Should I start the coffee?” she asked.

“Not for me. I’m not comfortable sitting here exposed like this.”

“Glad to hear it. Neither am I.”

They moved to the open staircase to explore the upper level.

“Big house,” he commented.

“Nice décor,” she agreed, wondering what would happen when they reached the bedrooms. Would he suggest a single bed? Should she?

She’d lost her mind. Sex was the last thing she should be thinking about. But all through dinner she’d wondered what it would be like to be kissed by him. He exuded such quiet strength. Combined with his obvious sensitivity, and gallant, old-fashioned manners, Flynn was pretty much irresistible. Too bad they had nothing in common except a would-be murderer.

There were five bedrooms upstairs. Two colorfully decorated children’s rooms that shared a Jack and Jill bathroom between them, a spacious guestroom done in elegant silver and blue with a matching bathroom, and a charming nursery off an immense master bedroom suite complete with a sitting area and a deck overlooking the woods.

“Did you see the size of these closets?” she asked.

“Planning to buy it?”

“What would I do with all this space?”

“Fill it with kids?”

Her stomach quivered at the thought. “Do I look like the maternal type to you?”

“You look like the type who can be whatever you set your mind to being.”

She couldn’t hold his gaze. Embarrassed, yet pleased by his words, she glanced around at the palatial master suite. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. You want this room?”

She quelled a flash of disappointment. “I think I’d rather take the guestroom. I might get lost in here.”

His lips quirked. “It is a bit much.” He stroked her cheek lightly.

She lifted her face, waiting. He smiled gently. “Good night, Whitney. Get some sleep.”

He didn’t kiss her. He had to know she’d expected him to. Puzzled, frustrated and a little put out, she turned on her heel and headed for the hall. She half expected him to follow her or call her back. He did neither. Was she misreading his attraction?

No, she didn’t think so, but he was tired and worried about his brother. Sex was the last thing either one of them should be thinking about right now. This was a model house. There wasn’t an iota of privacy with all these windows. Didn’t decorators believe in drapes anymore?

They had dropped their shopping bags at the top of the stairs while they looked around.
